Special Olympics Kindersley & District Program Overview

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. The ultimate goal of Special Olympics is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public’s awareness of their capabilities and needs.

Programs Offered

  • Track: Tuesdays from 6 PM to 7 PM during the months of November and February through May. Held at the West Central Events Centre walking track or whenever the weather is conducive to be outdoors.
  • Bowling:  The bowling program runs from September to November and January to April on Tuesday or Thursday evenings
  • Bocce:  The bocce program runs for 6 weeks – May to the middle of June; days TBD
  • Snowshoeing:  The snowshoeing program runs from first snowfall until the end of March on Saturday in Kerrobert and in Kindersley on Sunday. Starting at 3pm in both places. Locations vary depending on weather. We do have snowshoes available for all ages.
  • Fitness Nights:  Locations vary. We try to provide a variety of fitness activities to our athletes to keep them active. In the past we have provided Yoga Nights and are looking at trying some Zumba this year!
    Who are we looking for?
  • We are always looking for new athletes. Anyone aged 8 years and older with an intellectual disability is welcome to join us! Our athletes are of all ages, but we have recently started getting more interest from younger athletes in Kindersley and the surrounding area. Our programs are a great opportunity for all of our athletes to stay physically active, but more importantly to have the ability to socialize with their peers and feel the overwhelming acceptance and energy Special Olympics offers them.
  • Extra volunteers are always welcome! Our programs wouldn’t be possible without our amazing volunteers. We offer training for coaches in various sports and are always looking for new people dedicated to improving our programs and athlete experiences.
