Special Olympics Kindersley & District Program Overview
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. The ultimate goal of Special Olympics is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public’s awareness of their capabilities and needs.
Programs Offered
- Bowling: The bowling program runs from September to November and January to April on Thursday evenings
- Bocce: The bocce program program runs from September to November and January to April every other Tuesday evening. Indoors during the winter and outdoors weather permitting.
- Who are we looking for?
- We are always looking for new athletes. Anyone aged 8 years and older with an intellectual disability is welcome to join us! Our athletes are of all ages, but we have recently started getting more interest from younger athletes in Kindersley and the surrounding area. Our programs are a great opportunity for all of our athletes to stay physically active, but more importantly to have the ability to socialize with their peers and feel the overwhelming acceptance and energy Special Olympics offers them.
- Extra volunteers are always welcome! Our programs wouldn’t be possible without our amazing volunteers. We offer training for coaches in various sports and are always looking for new people dedicated to improving our programs and athlete experiences.
